There was this guy I’d never met, I’d see him riding his bicycle frequently. Always sitting up straight, head held high, looking straight ahead. Stately. Kingly. He was tall and thin, with a long grey beard and long grey dreadlocks. And the hat. I call them Jiffy Pop hats, like Jiffy Pop popcorn after it’s done popping. A hat like that with a bill.
I’d see this guy all the time, two or three times a week. I’d wave and he’d wave back, never turning his head to look at me, always looking straight ahead, riding his bike. I always wanted to stop and introduce myself, he seemed like such a cool dude. But I never did. I’m not cool like him, we’d have nothing in common. But I always figured maybe IĀ would. Someday.
But I always waved when I saw him, and he always waved back.
I heard that night before last he got hit on his bicycle by motor vehicle and killed. And that hurts me bad. How dare some hot dogging motorcyclist kill such a noble, royal dude?
I wish I’d have stopped and met him when I had the chance.

Was that on the road by Hell? I know the guy that hit him if so, and I would never call him a lowly drunk. He is a fine young man, bright, works hard, full of prospects. I have never heard of him being a drinker either. When last I heard (Monday), he was in critical condition in the hospital. Maybe we should wait on his story of what happened and the police investigation of what happened, know what i mean? Maybe he was in the wrong, and maybe he wasn’t…
I’ve been looking for it on the news, and have found nothing yet. All I know is what I heard from people who live right there.But when someone on a motor vehicle hits someone on a bicycle, it is seldom the bicyclists fault. Drunk or not, he was hot dogging his motorcycle and behaving recklessly.
Then again, it may be someone else, because it seems like your guy got hit on Monday night, and my guy’s accident took place over the weekend…. Plus, my guy was on a motorbike, not in a car…

You might be right re the hotdogging bit. Its pretty sad. Like i said, really bright guy. Works in IT, is very, very good at what he does, is well liked, etc., etc. by the way, I have been hit by a car when riding a bike and it was my fault… š

Only if you want to… The comments will help paint a better picture of him anyway. plus, he might have been drunk, though I would be very surprised if so.
Ok, I just asked afer his health today, and was told that he was coming from work that night. He had to go in between 11:00 and 12:00 to do something… So yeah, he probably wasn’t drunk.
Regardless of who is at fault or how it happened, the result is very, very sad.
That is so sad. We have become a cycling mad town and our roads are not built for it so sadly it is very common over here. Sorry you never got to say hello. Have a wonderful Wednesday.

Sorry to hear about this Mark. This is very sad. Yes hindsight is 20/20, but it gives us the vision on what to do next time. You might have had more in common with him that you think and Rasta’s are pretty friendly. Always keep an open mind. Some of my closest friends have been some of the ones I thought I had the least in common with, but there is always something that connects all of us.

The man who died following a road crash in West Bay on Sunday, 7 July, has been identified 57-year-old as Steve Andrew Powery.
The rider of the motorcycle, a 24-year-old man, remains in the Cayman Islands Hospital in a critical, but stable condition.
āA police enquiry into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing. Anyone who was in the area around 12.40am on Sunday and witnessed the crash, or has any information which could assist the investigation, is asked to contact the RCIPS Traffic Management Unit on 946-6254,ā a police spokesperson said.
UPDATE: 9:30 AM
Police confirm the cyclist injured in the crash has died. The collision occurred at 12:40 a.m. Sunday, 7 July. The motorbike rider was also injured and taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital. No word on the seriousness of his/her injuries. Police did not state whether the individual is male/female.
West Bay police are investigating the accident.

A cyclist and a motorbike collided just after midnight in the Hell area of West Bay. Officials tell Cayman 27 the area is blocked off to motor vehicle traffic due of the seriousness of the crash.
The incident occurred near Club Inferno, according to officials.
Details remain few and police have not provided any updates to the press as yet.
How very sad. I hope the motorbike rider is improving. Until you know all the facts, it is probably not right to presume whose fault the crash was.
Also, how sad that you never did act on the impulse to personally meet the cycle rider… hindsight eh.
Mark, even though you did not get to know the guy personally, you saw him enough to make him very familiar to you. The news that he died kind of hits like he was a friend. I’m sad this happened.
