Playing Hardball With Dogfood

Sheba has been not eating, we used to pour gravy into her food to get her to eat. My wife read the above article, and now we’re playing hardball. I’m not sure I like it. It doesn’t seem to be working. Sheba has barely eaten anything in, this is the third day.

I think dinner should be a joy for dogs. They should love it and woof it down. On the other hand, we, as the pet owners, are responsible for their health and diet, and Sheba is on food prescribed by the vet to help her lose weight. (I bet it tastes like crap.) But Sheba has done the same thing with every food we try (except canned food). So I’m kind of torn, if Sheba’s like me, Hunger Equals Anger, and although she doesn’t seem hungry or crabby, I’m keeping an eye on her.

Happy Sunday!

  1. I was always told that when you change dog foods you should do over a ten day period (or 5) where you mix 10% new 90% old, 20% new 80% old, etc. until you’ve completely switched over. I can’t remember if it ever worked.

  2. My first dawg, Ditto, he was a puppy and I got him Science Diet, he hated it. So I got some other food and mixed the two together, (didn’t want to waste the Science Diet). Ditto took mouthfuls and dropped them on the floor, then picked out the bits he liked!

  3. We had a dog who was fussy. He wouldn’t eat for days and his stomach growled. After four days, we had to throw out his bowl of food because it smelled and give him something new. He was always on medication for his ears so that complicated the food situation. I used to buy some ham and spread his medication out on it and then roll it up and put it in the freezer. As a result we never mixed his food again with the pill in it. Dogs usually get their way and sometimes are hard to fool. 🙂

    • We use these things called “Pill Pockets” they’re oily and smelly like with a texture kinda like Play Doh. Wrap the pill in there and it’s undetectable.
We don’t let the food accumulate or get old and stale, although I have done it in the past.
Actually, Sheba ate all her dinner tonight in a timely fashion! First time!
