The Monkey Mind

For the last half decade, I’ve spent a considerable amount of time on meditation, mindfulness and awareness.

Ive become aware of the monkey mind, the seemingly random thoughts the brain generates.

I notice that sometimes five or ten minutes into a yoga class, I will realize that I haven’t heard what the teacher is saying. My body is obeying the cues, but my head isn’t there. Me, the real me, is operating on auto pilot in the background while the monkey mind chatters in the forefront of my head.

I’ve heard it likened to watching a movie in a movie theater,. Sometimes the movie is so good that you forget you’re in the theater and think you are in the movie. Sometimes you’re aware you’re in the theater watching a movie, you can feel the seat, smell the popcorn and be aware of what’s not in the movie.

When I become aware of it, the interesting thing is that I wasn’t aware of it before. I told my teacher about this, she said she knew, she could see it in my eyes. I also thought that was very interesting.

sometimes when I’m meditate I have a”good” session, where the monkey mind seems relatively quiet. Other sessions I call “bad” because the monkey mind just won’t shut up.

0f course, all the meditation sessions are good. Or perhaps they’re neither good nor bad, they just “are”

I am not my thoughts, I am not my planning for tomorrow, or my memories of yesterday, I’m the one here now breathing. I am the one observing the monkey mind. The monkey mind is the thoughts, I am The observer.

Is this true or false?

have a great day!
