La Palma Lava Reaches Sea

Nine days after it started erupting, lava from the La Palma volcano 🌋 reached the sea. Read the article HERE.

Now they’re in lockdown because of fears of toxic gasses. What toxic gases? The only thing would be steam. I think lock down is going too far. Governments solution for everything. It’s getting to the point where people need to use their common sense and knowledge instead of everything the government tells them.

Happy Wednesday! The weather man calls for increased chance of showers today. I hope so, but I’m not holding my breath. The weather is perfect.

I’ve swam the half mile every day this week at lunchtime, hopefully it will continue today.

Have a great day!!

Solar Storm

There is a news article HERE about a solar storm we’re having now. I was going to post this yesterday, but found a blurb that said this July 2021 solar storm stuff was fake news.

I don’t think solar activity is fake news, but if you Google “Solar storm could cause catastrophe”, you find we almost died practically every year since the internet was invented.

It takes light 8 minutes to reach earth from the sun. We’d not know what hit us if something happened to the sun. Maybe some of our instruments could give us a little heads up, but there’s nothing we could do about anything that happens to the sun.

In other news I did go to the farmer’s market yesterday, compared to the weekend one there was very small. I didn’t even take any pictures. But I did buy a mango smoothie and a star fruit that I ate at work. Maybe I can germinate the seeds…

Tonight is movie night but I’m not sure if I’m going or not. Have a wonderful day!

Volcano Plus Northern Lights

Greatest show on earth. Read the article HERE. In Iceland, a volcano has been going off for some time. From what I see on the news, it is a non-violent eruption and people have been able to walk right up to the lava flows, very close.

When I was in the Navy at Pearl Harbor (Oahu) The volcano going off on the Big Island would give us hazy skies and I always wanted to go see the lava. But on Hawaii, it was too explosive and violent, so I never did. (That and laziness and the expense, etc.) The active volcano in Costa Rica was hidden in a shroud of clouds, and although we were techically in a danger zone, couldn’t see a durn thing.

I’ve never seen the northern lights either, We looked for them in Canada, but nada.

So, for me, the pictures and the story from the article above are spectacular, and I’d love to see it, especially both at once!.

Have a good Wednesday!

Stuck In Suez

As you probably already know, the Panamanian-flagged container vessel MV Ever Given is stuck in the Suez Canal, turned sideways in low visibility and high winds.

Some say weeks to free her, Egypt says they’ll have her out over the weekend. The news says this disruption in shipping will have a planetary effect.

We’ll all find out.

From what I’ve read the past few days, about 40 ships a day pass through the Suez Canal, at about $350,000 USD . The price is based on the cost of going around South Africa.

It will be interesting to watch this unfold.

Happy FRIDAY! We had tacos and I also had a big burger last night. I think we’re pretty much going to be regulars at the Westin Movie Night from now on.

Have a GREAT weekend!

Muhammed Ali Funeral Today

image

Today is Muhammed Ali’s funeral in Kentucky. My Uncle owned Everlast Sporting Goods, He met Mr Ali many many times. My Dad was vice president for Everlast, once Muhammed Ali talked to my Dad on the phone. He said “Marv, I need this equipment…”

I had the above picture hanging on my door in my room in Missouri for many many years. It was as big as the door, bigger than life size.

Rest In Peace Mr. Ali. Say hello to my Uncle and Dad for me!

Missing Boy In Japan Found

image

There was a boy, dropped off by the side of the road as punishment for throwing stones missing almost a week before being found today or yesterday.

When I was a kid, I did my best to not modify my behavior when punished, to illustrate that punishment was inffective.

Good job kid, I’d say you kicked ass!

In other news, we got a new fridge yesterday. Two and a half thousand dollars… My phone died, I called the manufacturer because of a one year warranty, and they say the IMEI number isn’t valid. Sounds like a loada hooie to me. Meanwhile, I’m getting my ancient Galaxy S III fired up again.

And it’s Friday. Rainy all weekend, don’t care.

Have a good weekend.

Plain Ol’ Americans

Cam Newton, quarterback for the American football team the Carolina Panthers, says he’s an African American quarterback, and that people are afraid of him. Funny, I didn’t know he was born in Africa, migrated to the US and became an American citizen. In my life, I have knowingly only met one African American. He was born in Zimbabwe, moved to the US, got a green card, nd later got full citizenship. And he’s a white guy. Sorry Cam, you’re just a plain ‘ol American, just like most Americans. And you’re a great quarterback, hope your team wins the Super Bowl!

image

It’s been my observation, that many Caribbean black people think it’s funny that American black people want to be called African Americans, because it’s not true. African Americans moved from Africa and became citizens, and it has nothing to do with skin color.

Yesterday, I rode the scooter for the first time in about two weeks. The weather forecast had predicted rain every day till yesterday. Tonight, it’s supposed to start raining again, and rain all weekend. I hope I can make it home again this afternoon before it starts raining. The scooter was super hard to start yesterday, I was ready to give up when it finally came to life.

Have a great day!

Mexico Hit With Seaweed

image

from the BBC

I’ve been watching this for the past couple of weeks on the Akumal beach webcam, there’s a link in the menu bar above. Usually it’s one or two guys out in the morning with rakes and a wheelbarrow, but nowadays it’s a dozen guys and big truck after big truck backing onto the beach hauling it away. There’s still more floating at sea.

Check out the webcam, it’s not too bad today, I think the news was over before it made the news. Monday there was seaweed all the way to the tree closest to the water, and piled high!

Yesterday I ran out of gas on my scooter. I forgot. A couple days ago, I remember looking at a quarter tank, thinking “I’ll need gas tomorrow”.Then yesterday the engine started cutting out and the fuel gauge was on “E” the engine died at the light right next to the Rubis gas station. It took $6.25 to fill! That’s a lot for my scooter, usually $5 is max.

HUMPDAY! Have a goodun!

The man left behind in the shark attack

image

So, I just read an article about a in-the-water photographer who was forgotten during the Mick Fanning almost shark attack. It was an oversight on the part of the rescuers, caught up in the moment, but it speaks poorly of the  organizers of the surf meet, inadequate training and procedures.

How would it  have felt to watch everyone leave after you just saw a giant fin of a shark that attacked someone near you in the water? Imagine the swim in alone, knowing there was a hungry shark about.
