Yesterday i finished a fantastic book, turned out to be one of my favorites of all time. Doomsday Book. A book about time travel and a pandemic. In the book a young woman is sent back in time to the year 1320. But something goes wrong, and she is very I’ll upon arriving. At the start of the book, the parts that took place in the present time seemed irrelevant. The parts that take place in the 1300’s were very interesting. But the occurrences in the past merged with the occurrences in the present until both sides of the story were great. Definite must read.
And today:
500 Duolingo days in a row! I need to find someone to speak Spanish with though. Duolingo is my only experience.
I received an email from Goodreads that I found interesting. My Year In Books.
If you’re on Goodreads, find me (MarkD60) and add me to your friends list.
It was a good long weekend, I got my World Cup Wish, Argentina won! The score was 3-3, but France lost because of penalties. I think the NFL should do that and eliminate ties. If the end score is the same, the team which racked up the greatest penalty yardage, loses. The ties mess everything up..
NASA just launched a rocket called Artemis to the moon. It has an empty crew capsule, will orbit the moon, return to Earth, and splashdown into the Pacific. There’s an article for you to read HERE.
I am also reading a book entitled Artemis by Andy Weir, (who also wrote The Martian, which became a movie.)
I have been pretty much unable to put the book down since I started it a few days ago.
Artemis is (was?) a Greek goddess. She was very affiliated with the moon, as you can see HERE.
(Not sure if the above image is Artemis or Diana. I guess Diana is the Roman version of Artemis)
Anyway, it’s my Thursday off. It started POURING rain about sunrise strong winds and driving rain. I don’t know what’s going on weatherwise. But it doesn’t matter, I’m just going to be reading my book.
SPOILER ALERT! Reading further might reduce the pleasure gained, if you plan on reading this book.
I’m reading a book called Klara And The Sun. I like it quite a lot. It’s about an AF, artificial friend, a robot, who gets energy from the sun.
i find it very enjoyable. Klara is purchased for a young girl who has some kind of sickness. I am about 60% through the book.
At the beginning of the book, Klara was in the store, and I didn’t know what she was, what AF stood for or anything. It has been a pleasant read from the beginning, figuring out what is going on has been, for me, one of the main pleasures. Hence the spoiler alert. Worth a read.
You know I take yoga, right? I realized I feel shame about yoga. I was avoiding saying I was went. To me, it’s not viewed as a very tough, manly thing to do. It was recommended that I take yoga by my counselor as strongly as a counselor can recommend, which really isn’t very forceful, but I was willing to do anything to feel better and I have to admit yoga makes me feel better and is excellent excellent exercise. (Depending on the class).
i reading a book called The Difference Engine. I’m reluctant to post about it because, at about 15% of the way through, I can’t really even tell you what it’s about.
In my opinion, it starts with this very old woman in the early 1900’s. Then she goes back and we hear about her child and young womanhood in the mid 1800s. She gets recruited by who I thought was a scam artist/con artist. AND then, the chapters jump around in about the same time frame. The con man gets the girl, (who may or not be the main character) to break into a hotel room to retrieve an item that was stolen from the con man. But she seems to be at least the third burglar and there is a bloody death. Then there is what seems to be these steam powered horse races. These guys with a new machine blow everybody away in the race. These are the con man’s acquaintances. I think.
And also there’s these boxes of cards, like punch machine cards, seemingly in every chapter, but I haven’t figured them out yet.
It’s interesting to read, but I’m waiting for the “click” where all the bits come together, and I probably should have waited before trying to post about it, but… This book makes me consider looking up the genre of “weird” and see what comes up…
When I was looking for the image above to use, I saw that this book is attributed to be one of the starting factors of the Steampunk genre/style. I try not to read the book reports or reviews of books I’m reading because I don’t want to be influenced by anything other than the book, but I did see that.
I will read reviews in order to find my next book, but not once I start reading the book.
What attracted me to steampunk in the first place was the people and clothes and machines. Look it up.
I walk the dogs in the mornings and turn around at a spot I call Doublepaint. It’s at a “T” junction where I guess the paint machine put down some extra thick paint.
i took the pictures this morning, then had an inkling that I had posted about it before. And I have. But it’s interesting (only to me probably) to see the difference between then and now.
Tomorrow is Friday! The weather is supposed to turn crappy, but I don’t care, I can’t dive this weekend because of my tooth, or lack thereof.
I’m reading a weird book that maybe I will post about tomorrow.
I’m reading a book that I’m really enjoying. The Rain Heron. It starts off with a girl, Ren, who lives on a farm in a nice village. There’s a Heron, she comes out of the water and feeds her land, and she’s the most prosperous in the village. Then a boy, jealous of her prosperity, tries to kill the bird. The bird leaves, there’s a heat wave, and everything goes sour. Ren goes off and lives in the woods. Years later, soldiers come to Rens mountain, looking for the Heron.
Later on, there’s another girl, Zoe, who, with her aunt, collects ink from squid. Their village survives by the ink, and the secret of collecting the super useful ink. They don’t hurt the squid. Then a man comes, no one will share the method, and he tries to get the ink by killing the squid. Then things go sour in the village. Then Zoes aunt gets killed, as they are leaving the village. Zoe becomes a soldier.
Zoe turns out to be the leader of the soldiers who are looking for the Heron.
I’m a little over half way through.
It’s a great book. A story type story that I’m really liking. A tale.
It is the first Friday of the new year! It’s been a long busy week for me, trying to catch up at work.
The latest book I’m reading is called Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. It is super good, very entertaining, can’t put it down excellent.
Andy Weir wrote a book called The Martian from which they made the movie starring Matt Damon.
The worst thing about this book is you read it in less than a week and you want more.
The good thing about this book project Hail Mary, is that it’s really good. This guy wakes up on a spaceship and discovers that germs are eating the sun. Sunlight levels are decreasing and he has to kill these germs. Incidents, he also wakes up after a coma with amnesia and can’t remember any of this. Then this alien comes cruising up in his spaceship and they work together to kill the germs.
And there’s more!
PS: they’re not really germs, but they’re tiny and I can’t think of a better way to easily describe them.
