Today is the day!

Chilean miners expected to be rescued today!

This evening they should start bringing the miners out, one by one. Some sources say it will take 15 minutes for the capsule to reach the surface from the bottom. The video above says 30. Looking at the articles on the web, there are very different reports of when it will start, now long it will take, and several of the minor details. (Get it? Miner Details!! Haa haa ha). I wonder if any of the miners are minors?

I guess they will start when they are ready, and nobody knows the exact time they will be ready.

The president of Chile is rumored to be coming.
One video showed crowd control barricades, so I rekkon the Prez IS indeed coming. Hope he’s not late! Imagine having to wait down at the bottom because the president is late!
Maybe someday one of the miners will read this blog. I doubt it, but it’s possible.

Boring everyone to death

I guess that nobody wants to hear about the Chilean Miners, but the drill reached them. Now they have to decide whether to line the hole with pipe. If they don’t, then a rock might fall and jam the elevator capsule.

This morning was sunny, first sunny morning in a long long long time, it seems like.

More on the Chilean miners

I’ve been waiting for this. The drill may reach them tomorrow! There is debate on whether it is necessary to line the hole with pipe before bringing the miners out.

Relief shaft could break through to miners by Saturday but bringing men to the surface could take up to eight days

10/08/2010 07:37 AM GMT (TransWorldNews)

The mining minister of Chile announced that the rescue drill is scheduled to reach the trapped miners by Saturday based on the present progress. The earlier government estimate was that it would be November before the miners could be freed. The rapid progress of one of the three drills employed has made it possible to reach the miners faster.

By Thursday the drill was just 300 feet away from the collapsed shaft where the miners had taken shelter. Meanwhile, on the surface, the debate rages whether it is necessary to reinforce the shaft with a metal pipe before the miners are helped out. The final decision regarding the reinforcement will be taken once the actual video images are taken after the drill punctures through. Reinforcing the shaft might delay the rescue by as much as eight days.

Technology has gone a long way in keeping the miners in the shaft fairly comfortable since the time they were first found. A fiber optic communication link helps in communicating with the outside world. A five foot long hollow cylinder, which acts like a pneumatic tube, also known as a paloma has been helpful in reaching supplies to the trapped miners. They have been supplied with self sterilizing clothes to help maintain hygiene and contain body odor.

I’m really glad it’s Friday, I like watching Fridays come over from New Zealand.
Here it is rainy again. Last night I sat outside, smoked a cigar and looked at the stars. Saw the most incredible shooting star, traveled over half the sky. I was surprised it was raining this morning. I put the plants out in the rain, that should make it get sunny!
Have a Good weekend!

Lenovo Quickstart

My new “free” computer came with this ‘thing’ called Lenovo Quickstart. When you turn your computer on, it starts really fast, but it’s not Windows. I’m using it now. Quickstart just gives you the basics. Surf the web, use Skype, and a photo app. It is really Splashtop, but for Lenovo. You can get Splashtop on your computer if you want I think. It’s great if you’re in a hurry at the airport or somewhere you don’t have time to wait forever while windows boots up. Of course you can always enter windows normally if you want..I noticed a funny thing. I did a Yahoo Search for Google news, and it isn’t there, at least not on the first page. It’s almost there, but not quite. They try to give you a bunch of links first, so you click anything BUT Google News. Low life yahoos.

Here its a miserable, windy cold rainy day. My Wife has a hand held wind meter that was showing gusts of up to 50 MPH last night.

The other day I posted that I was almost half way done with my online course, well, I got another load of books, and that means I’m less than a quarter way done. That means I need to buckle down and get off this blog.

Ciao for now. (That rhymes)

Cursing in Church

A crusty old man walks into the local Church and says to the secretary, “I would like to join this damn church.” The astonished woman replies, “I beg your pardon, sir. I must have misunderstood you… What did you say?” “Listen up, damn it. I said I want to join this damn church!” “I’m very sorry sir, but that kind of language is not tolerated in this church.” The secretary leaves her desk and goes into the pastor’s study to inform him of the situation. The pastor agrees that the secretary does not have to listen to that foul language.. They both return to her office, and the pastor asks the old geezer, “Sir, what seems to be the problem here?” “There is no damn problem,” the man says. “I just won $200 million bucks in the damn lottery and I want to join this damn church to get rid of some of this damn money.” “I see,” said the pastor.. “And is this bitch giving you a hard time?”

not Too Busy

I got up early this morning to study. I think I am almost half way done with my course. Then I can start the next one, the one I want to get under my belt.
I didn’t really get up early, I got up at 5:15, my normal time, but I haven’t really been getting up that early lately.
Yesterday I mowed the yard. I think I must have the crappiest working lawnmower on Earth. First, the pull cord broke, I replaced it. Three wheels fell off during the mow, I had to replace a bolt and put the wheels back on. And finally the mower blade broke in half. I went out and got another one. Actually, the hardware store didn’t have any my size, and the owner gave me an old rusty one for free. It matches my mower perfectly!
Today I have a dental appointment. I had originally named this post “Too Busy” but changed the name.

Back

We got back home from the Brac yesterday. It’s nice to be back, but wish we could have stayed longer. Here’s some misc pics.
