I bought a Boox Color Note 4C Last May I think. I never used it because I loved my Kindle Scribe. So, last November first, I decided I’d use the Boox for 30 days to get used to it. When November was over and the 30 days was up, I was in the US for eye surgery and wasn’t able to make the switch back. I’m kind of glad I used the Boox longer than the planned 30 days.
It took some getting used to, the Boox isn’t as intuitive as the Scribe. The Boox has full Android and the Scribe is much like any Kindle, except you can write on it. The Scribe seems nicer to write on, I think that that’s because of the texture of the glass. The Scribe display seems easier to read. Better contrast? The visibility of the writing on the screen is better somehow. The Boox text seems a little lighter, less black, more grey. The Boox has a color display but the colors are so dull it hardly even counts at all. However, when you print a document , the colors from the Boox are good. These color e-ink displays have a lot of room for improvemnent, and they will improve. Someday e-ink will replace all other screens.
After what I just wrote, it’s Boox all the way. It took me a long time to find the “writing utensil” that I could write neatly with. (There’s probably hundreds of pens and markers to choose from, on the Boox, all fully customizable.. The Scribe has maybe 10 or 15, but how many does one need?
The Kindle Scribe has better battery life
The Kindle App worked flawlessly on the Boox, syncing perfectly both ways. Using the Kindle app on the Boox, I cannot make handwritten notes.
HOWEVER, the Boox has its own reader, Neo-Reader that reads apparently all the formats. (With the Scribe, you can side load MOBI’s and AZW3 files and email EPUB’s. Books bought from Amazon, aren’t really on hte Kindle in a “normal” format). So I was asking myself, with the Boox, why do I need the Kindle app except for Kindle-bought books. I guess I don’t. But where does one buy ebooks except Amazon?
Importantly, with NeoReader, I can copy and paste content from the books and write with the pen anywhere on the page. Exactly like writing in a paper book. The Scribe creates a box with my writing (or typing) in it,
I love both the Scribe and the Boox. I didn’t want to switch from the scribe to the boox, and I didn’t want to switch back from the boox to the scribe..
I have a whole lot more learning to do about the capabilities of the boox.
Note that I have the first generation Kindle Scribe. There’s a second release and also a color Scribe now available. The Boox Color Note 5C is out, I have the 4C.
if I was starting from scratch, and had to choose, probably the Boox is the better value and more capable machine.
Happy Monday, it’s colder here than I ever remember it being. Have a great week!
AND! HAPPY GROUNDHOG DAY!!!
